MUSC 2035 Aural Theory III

Aural Theory III is a continuation of MUSC 1045. The student will engage with melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic materials that are more complex than in previous semesters including compound meters, syncopation, and chromaticism and modulation in diatonic melodies. Prerequisite: completion of MUSC 1040 and MUSC 1045. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 2040. (2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Accurately sing diatonic melodies that include chromatic embellishments, changing forms of the minor scale, secondary harmonies, modulations to closely related keys, and borrowed harmonies.

2. Accurately perform subdivided and syncopated rhythms in simple and compound meters.

3. Notate accurate dictations of diatonic melodies that include chromatic embellishments, changing forms of the minor scale, secondary harmonies, modulations to closely related keys, and borrowed harmonies.

4. Notate accurate dictations of subdivided and syncopated rhythms in simple and compound meters.

5. Differentiate by ear diatonic chords and inversions within a major harmonic progression.

6. Differentiate by ear diatonic chords in root position within a minor harmonic progression.
