MUSC 1040 Written Theory II

In this continuation of MUSC 1030, the student will examine voice-leading conventions in choral texture, different types of key modulations, and secondary harmonies. All topics are reinforced with systematic analysis and practical application. Prerequisite: Completion of MUSC 1030 and MUSC 1035. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 1045. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Label harmonies in varying musical textures using Roman numeral, pop-chord, and figured-bass analysis symbols.

2. Apply correct voice-leading procedures in triad progressions in a choral texture.

3. Identify common-chord, chromatic, and phrase modulations in music examples.

4. Analyze thematic sections in binary, rounded binary, and ternary music forms.

5. Compose short passages of music that include examples of techniques studied in class.
