MUSC 1035 Aural Theory I

This introductory course in aural music theory is designed to develop the student's skills in ear-training and sight-singing with emphasis on melody, harmony and, rhythm. Prerequisite: completion of or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 1030. (2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Accurately sing melodies that employ whole-beat values and include intervals of a perfect fifth or narrower as well as octaves or sixths that occur between pitches of a primary triad.

2. Accurately sing, utilizing solfege, the major and harmonic minor diatonic scales.

3. Notate accurate dictations of rhythms using full-beat values as well as duple subdivisions of the beat.

4. Notate accurate dictations of melodies that include stepwise movement as well as intervals of a sixth or narrower that occur between pitches of a primary triad.

5. Identify, by ear, intervals of a major sixth or narrower.

6. Identify, by ear, the quality of major and minor triads.
