MUSC 1030 Written Theory I

In this introductory course for music majors, the student will examine fundamentals of written music and harmonic analysis including notation, scales, modes, intervals, key signatures, triad construction, and basic harmonic and melodic organization. Prior musical knowledge is not required. Prerequisite: completion of or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 1035. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Read standard music notation symbols in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs.

2. Write standard music notation symbols in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs.

3. Identify harmonic and melodic interval values and qualities.

4. Identify tertian triads and seventh chords in root position or inversion.

5. Analyze basic harmonic structures including harmonic cadences and non-harmonic tones in keyboard and choral textures.

6. Label standard patterns in melodic writing including sequences, phrases, and periods.

7. Compose short passages of music that include examples of techniques studied in class.
