MUSC 2040 Written Theory IV

In this final course of the written theory sequence, the student will depart from traditional harmonic practices of the 18th and 19th centuries and explore 20th century techniques and practices. Prerequisites: completion of MUSC 2030. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 2045. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Analyze music composed in post-Romantic style.

2. Compose a short piece of original music in an impressionistic style.

3. Discuss compositional devices employed in the early twentieth century in varying styles.

4. Examine tone rows and pitch-class sets in music employing composition techniques of the Second Viennese School.

5. Compose a short piece of original music utilizing a twelve-tone matrix.
