WELD 2655 Gas Metal Arc Welding / Flux Cored Arc Welding on Pipe

This course introduces the student to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) on pipe. Topics include modes of metal transfer, electrode identification, power sources, troubleshooting techniques, set-up, and operation. The course projects enable the student to advance their Gas Metal Arc Welding and Flux Cored Arc Welding skills on pipe. All projects are graded using the AWS B2.1 Specification for Welding Procedures and Performance Qualification. Prerequisite: Completion of WELD 1610, WELD 1710, and WELD 1750. (2 lect, 4 lab)

Credits

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Pass the safety exam with a score of 80% or higher to gain admittance to the welding lab.

2. Demonstrate safe working habits while in the welding lab.

3. Demonstrate proper equipment set-up and operation as it relates to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) on pipe.

4. Demonstrate a knowledge of machine settings for GMAW and FCAW applications on pipe.

5. Demonstrate a knowledge of various shielding gases and how they affect the weld when using the GMAW and FCAW process on pipe.

6. Demonstrate an understanding of the different modes of metal transfer and how they affect the weld when using the GMAW and FCAW process on pipe.

7. Produce quality GMAW and FCAW welds in various welding positions and joint configurations on pipe.

8. Use non-destructive and destructive test methods to determine weld quality and acceptability.

9. Demonstrate an understanding of electrode classification and selection for the GMAW and FCAW processes.
