Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Apply Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) standards in the medical laboratory, including standard precautions, safety, and biohazardous waste procedures.
2. Implement infection control and proper hand hygiene technique.
3. Describe the purpose of safety data sheets.
4. Perform quality control measures in accordance with established guidelines.
5. Demonstrate specimen collection in accordance with current practice standards.
6. Provide patient teaching regarding specimen collection with consideration for patient rights, comfort, and potentially sensitive subject matter.
7. Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory tests.
8. Demonstrate appropriate follow-up for normal and abnormal lab test results.
9. Complete the requirements for basic life-support certification.
