MEDA 1525 Clinical Role of the Medical Assistant II

A continuation of MEDA-1520, this course provides the student with more advanced theoretical concepts and skills associated with the clinical role of a medical assistant. Emphasis is on respiratory testing, electrocardiography procedures, assisting with minor surgical procedures, and sterile technique. Other topics include patient education and health promotion. Prerequisite: Completion of MEDA-1520. (1.5 lect., 3 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Apply the principles of aseptic technique when setting up and managing a sterile field.

2. Identify the instruments used in minor and specialty procedures.

3. Demonstrate a dressing change and wound care.

4. Perform respiratory testing procedures.

5. Perform basic EKG procedures, including follow-up for normal and abnormal EKG tracings.

5. Educate patient in health promotion and disease prevention, including dietary and nutritional needs.

6. Discuss assessment findings and appropriate responses to emergency situations in a mass casualty incident training.
