MEDA 1520 Clinical Role of the Medical Assistant I

This course introduces the student to the theoretical concepts and practical applications associated with the clinical role of a medical assistant. Classroom and laboratory activities provide the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to assist licensed healthcare providers with routine and emergent care of patients in ambulatory care. Procedural skills associated with specialty practices will be explored. The student will demonstrate exam room preparation, patient intake and screening, measuring vital signs, and documenting patient information. Components of a patient examination are covered. Instruction includes key aspects of effective communication and patient interaction. Emphasis is placed on patient confidentiality, legal scope of practice, and ethical behavior. (1.5 lect., 3 lab)
