OEAC 2025 Wilderness Navigation

This field-based course introduces skills for land-based wilderness navigation. The student will use topographic maps, compasses, and handheld GPS units for backcountry travel on and off-trail. Topics include map reading, route finding, "Leave No Trace" techniques, trip planning, documentation, digital map software, and fitness considerations for hiking. (2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Select appropriate food, clothing, and equipment for extended day hikes.

2. Demonstrate physical fitness on challenging hikes.

3. Plan a day hike for a group of peers.

4. Implement "Leave No Trace" travel techniques.

5. Demonstrate basic competency in map, compass, and handheld GPS use.

6. Manage risks effectively while leading others in backcountry terrain.
