ENGL 1007 English Writing Workshop

This course is a writing workshop component to work on specific areas of concern tailored to student's unique writing issues and thus prepare them for their assignments for the non-workshop portions of the class. A central objective of the course is to prepare students to successfully complete various writing assignments frequently required of college students. The course emphasizes clear well-ordered expository and argumentative writing, with variety in sentence structure, carefully developed paragraphs, smooth transitions and appropriate use of the language. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 0610 or placement into ENGL 0620 or higher. (1 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Compose paragraphs that are unified with explicit topic sentences and appropriate supporting information

2. Produce writing that a) reveals mastery of thesis statements and topic sentences; b) is focused and logically organized; c) uses effective, appropriate syntax and diction and d) reveals proper grammar and punctuation

3. Critically analyze college-level essays-assessing content, style, purpose, and audience

4. Review MLA s1yle to help complete a correctly documented research essays

5. Identify and compose explicit thesis statements and supporting topic sentences

6. Use collaboration and peer editing

7. Employ all the stages of the writing process: pre-drafting, drafting, and revising
