EQST 2585 Equine Bodywork II

This advanced course builds upon foundational equine anatomy to explore the practical application of manual therapies and soft tissue mobilization. The student will develop refined palpation skills to manipulate postural compensation patterns and musculoskeletal restrictions. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of bodywork techniques into professional equine management to optimize athletic performance, support injury recovery, and enhance the overall well-being of the horse. Prerequisite: Completion of EQST 1585. (2 lect., 3 lab)

Credits

3 credits

Major Topics

  • Advanced palpation and assessment techniques

  • Interconnected chains of tissue function throughout the equine body

  • Relationship between primary injuries and muscular compensatory patterns

  • Modalities for myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and stretching protocols

  • Equine performance optimization utilizing bodywork

  • Ethics and boundaries of professional equine practice

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Investigate advanced palpation and stretching techniques to release soft tissue tension and range of motion.

2. Formulate individualized bodywork protocols based on a horse’s specific discipline and biomechanical needs.

3. Evaluate the relationship between saddle fit, hoof balance, and compensatory muscular patterns.

4. Execute specific mobilization and myofascial release techniques to address restricted movement.

5. Synthesize findings to communicate professional recommendations to owners and equine specialists.
