MATH 1500 Applied Math

This course emphasizes practical, skill-based mathematical applications tailored to specific career and technical industries. The student will engage with real-world problems relevant to their field of study by applying mathematical concepts to develop effective solutions. Key topics include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, positive and negative numbers, exponents, algebra, equations, and formulas. Calculators or other industry-specific tools will be utilized to enhance problem-solving skills. Prerequisite: Test into MATH 0900 or higher (3 lect.) APPM

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Perform fundamental arithmetic operations with whole numbers.

2. Demonstrate the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all fractions types including proper, improper, and mixed fractions as related to the field.

3. Demonstrate the ability to convert fractions to decimals, decimals to fractions, and simplify fractions.

4. Perform fundamental arithmetic operations with negative numbers including negative whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

5. Demonstrate the ability to complete operations with exponents.

6. Demonstrate unit conversions as related to the industry.

7. Solve real-world problems by applying algebraic concepts including the order of operations as related to the field.

8. Solve industry problems using the correct tools of the related field.

9. Explore mathematics as an evolving discipline interrelated with human culture and its connections to other disciplines.
