EQST 1560 Equine Bodywork I

The student will gain fundamental knowledge and skill development in equine bodywork techniques, identify the sequence of assessing equine movement, and identify specific muscle and skeletal groups that may contribute to gait abnormalities. The course includes beginning equine massage, stretching, and musculoskeletal release techniques. (2 lect., 2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Explain how an individual horse’s performance and soundness may benefit from receiving equine bodywork.

2. Discuss gait analysis and locations of specific acupoints, muscles, and skeletal landmarks leading to an appropriate plan of action to improve the horse's movement.

3. Demonstrate safe and correct equine bodywork techniques.

4. Indicate awareness of equine discomfort, relaxation, musculoskeletal tension, or release from a performed bodywork session.

5. Determine if the horse needs further rehabilitation, maintenance, or medical needs that may require other professional care.
