MEDA 1725 Medical Assisting Fundamentals II

This course provides the student with advanced theoretical concepts and skills associated with the clinical role of a medical assistant. Emphasis is on medication administration, cardiopulmonary testing, sterile technique, wound care, patient education, and health promotion. This course is for students enrolled in the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program. Instructor permission is required. The student must be employed by an affiliated healthcare agency throughout enrollment in the course. (4 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Describe the preparation and sterilization of instruments.

2. Examine the steps necessary for preparing and maintaining a sterile field.

3. Identify the instruments used in specialty and minor surgical procedures.

4. Describe the procedures for dressing change and wound care.

5. Explain cardiac and respiratory procedures performed by the medical assistant.

6. Identify abnormal electrocardiogram tracings and the necessary follow-up procedures.

7. Describe the legal role of the medical assistant in medication administration.

8. Use a drug reference to find drug classifications, forms, actions, and side effects with emphasis on the most commonly prescribed drugs.

9. Examine the principles of medication preparation, dosing, administration, documentation and follow-up care.

10. Demonstrate safe medication dosage calculations and conversions between measurement systems.

11. Correlate disorders of the body with common medications used in their management.

12. Explain the role of nutrition in the health and well-being of the patient.
